There’s a huge difference between relating and understanding a motive behind something with a fictional character than a murder in real life. The fact that the character and the actions performed by said character is fantasy, where as say the same thing happening in real life isn’t. You can understand motive, you can relate to the character without it actually reflecting on your own judgement when it comes to real life circumstances. If you can’t separate reality from fiction, then I don’t think you should serve on jury duty either, but if you honestly assume that everyone is going to judge someone the same as a fictional character in a story as they would in a real life situation, then that’s pretty sad and ridiculous.

Understanding a reason doesn’t justify it, nor does it make it not bad, what Eridan did was bad, without a doubt, but you can still understand why he did it, without it being a fault to you as a person. I understand and I sympathize with Eridan, but that doesn’t mean what he did was any less bad, it is bad, but there are two sides to everything and psychology behind those actions taken, and while I’m not condemning Feferi or Kanaya or saying it was their fault forever!!! The situation lead up to an unsavory end, but I understand both sides and know where the fault lies, but that doesn’t mean I can’t understand why it happened, or doesn’t mean I can’t relate to Eridan. Everyone is flawed, some more than others, flawed characters are more relatable in a lot of cases. Upbringing has to do with a lot of faults, doesn’t excuse shit that rises from it, but it definitely explains why the outcome happened. Just because something is understandable doesn’t mean it’s excused, and even then, only really by human standards.

hey ur right maybe understandable isnt the word i meant. altho ppl who are quick to be like “well its understandable” still make me go ,`:-| (in my imagination, i cant raise only 1 eyebrow in real life)

i mean heck i ~understand~ why hes terrible i guess like hes super lonely and not good at emotions and stuff, like i get whats going on there? and thats why hes my favorite… i cant rly relate to him but i can relate to everyone around him… so i that sense its understandable? i think?

but honestly i call bs on the “u cant hold trolls to human standards” thing bc it seems like the big argument is “troll society encourages/enforces bigotry” and human society does that too?? many human societies actively encourage oppression/harrassment/murder of certain demographics of ppl we havent rly evolved past that as a species. and its not like alternia is so much more horrible that its inescapable because there are plenty of trolls who think eridan is a creepster & that its not ok to murder your friends

and i dont think that every eridan fan hates women 9_9 more like, i think a lot of people find eridan to be a victim of circumstance because they have internalized some nasty-ass shit

There is a huge difference between troll society and human society. I agree, there is a lot of bigotry and hate enforced and encouraged by our society, but there is a good portion of our society that doesn’t. Where as trolls are a lot more cut throat about it, they even have the indigo bloods that make the lower bloods too fearful to stand against them. They also are more naturally violent and hateful than humans, their own genetics make them worse than humans. Equius, Gamzee and Eridan are all examples of this, Equius was only saved from his own violent nature because he had a moirail. Humans do not need something like a moirail to protect ourselves and others from our own violent tendencies. To simply write off the troll’s society as something so simple and compare it to human society is kinda unfair and just simply incorrect. We don’t have a Toltalitarian government that rules over the whole planet, nor a leader that could decimate our population at the mere thought of it through an extremely powerful lusus. Everything for the trolls were enforced with death.

But, going back to those societies for humans that DO enforce you being a murderer, lets look at, say, the Nazis. Where they had summer camps to train and raise their children to be future SS soldiers. They grew up with only really knowing that, those values instilled in them and while ultimately what they did was bad, it’s understandable why they did it, why they would come to something like that. When your society instills such values within you and that really is all you know and it’s what is expected of you, it’s no surprise that you’d follow that. There are some that are a break of the mold, some that do realize this is wrong, and that’s where individual personality comes in, some people are more resistant to such things than others, like Feferi. By all means, she should most definitely be alright with killing low bloods and treating them like scum, but she, for whatever reason, doesn’t follow that, wants to eradicate those views and standards. Though, just because SHE came to that conclusion, doesn’t mean it’d be so easy for everyone else. Eridan was very much conditioned by society, much like those children in those Nazi camps, they are definitely wrong in what they did, no matter of understanding will ever erase what horrible things have been done, nor what horrible things Eridan has done, but the fact that there IS a reason, that something lead up to it instead of it happening for no reason what so ever, makes Eridan relatable. At least for me.

Even by humans standards, I still find what he did relatable, if not in a literal sense, because I for one don’t plan on killing anyone any time soon, but the fact that a train of events can lead you to make bad decisions or bad choices, where you might personally feel justified in doing so, is relatable, despite not being necessarily good. Doesn’t justify it, doesn’t make it okay, but bad decisions doesn’t necessarily make someone evil. Eridan is very much a victim of his society and a victim of himself, but he’s still ultimately guilty of his own actions. Now, when people try to excuse what he’s done, yes I do not agree with that, much like I don’t agree with any human group or society that’s done horrible things, despite their values, but it’s also unfair to put human morals and values on an alien society that’s grown completely different than that of ours. Especially considering the amount of control that is over their race, as compared to ours. When it comes down to how much control they have over even sex? There is a vast difference. Imagine if we had to have children every so often or we’d be killed. Even something like that being changed would definitely effect the condition of your life.

Also, while you don’t think every Eridan fan hates women? A lot do and that’s really kinda bullshit, I don’t even understand why gender gets brought into this, because despite what people may think, Eridan’s actions were not based on gender so much as it was general character interaction. Had Feferi been a guy, or Kanaya a guy, I highly doubt his course of action would differ, that’s placing human prejudice on a character who wouldn’t understand it. Gender means nothing to them, so why would it in this specific scenario? I don’t hate women, and in fact, he killed my favorite female character, but I still love Eridan, he’s my favorite, but I still view what he did wrong.

Sorry went on a little tangent there, but still. It’s obvious that Eridan wasn’t some incarnate of evil, he was raised in a society that preached hate and revered murderers. It’s definitely obvious he was trying to fulfill his place in society, but his heart wasn’t necessarily into it either, it wasn’t till he was pushed, or felt that he was, that shit went sour. He was way more effected by their toxic society than the others, but that makes sense, since people are all different, people take in information and react differently. The worst part is, it’s mentioned that the twelve of them aren’t even that good at being a part of their own species, so if none of them are even at the standard of what a troll should be, I’m pretty sure their society is even less like ours than you might think.
