whenever people say that eridans actions are understandable or relatable because hes the product of a bigoted society [HS 5:2:005969] it sort of makes me wonder if they think this about actual terrible things that people do in real life because of real life institutional bigotry
its just an internet webcomic but when i read sthg like “yeah but he had to kill feferi what else could he do!!” all i can think is wow i hope you never ever serve on a jury ever
JUST SAYING!!!!!

just going to reblog this for that comment up there

There’s a huge difference between relating and understanding a motive behind something with a fictional character than a murder in real life. The fact that the character and the actions performed by said character is fantasy, where as say the same thing happening in real life isn’t. You can understand motive, you can relate to the character without it actually reflecting on your own judgement when it comes to real life circumstances. If you can’t separate reality from fiction, then I don’t think you should serve on jury duty either, but if you honestly assume that everyone is going to judge someone the same as a fictional character in a story as they would in a real life situation, then that’s pretty sad and ridiculous.
Understanding a reason doesn’t justify it, nor does it make it not bad, what Eridan did was bad, without a doubt, but you can still understand why he did it, without it being a fault to you as a person. I understand and I sympathize with Eridan, but that doesn’t mean what he did was any less bad, it is bad, but there are two sides to everything and psychology behind those actions taken, and while I’m not condemning Feferi or Kanaya or saying it was their fault forever!!! The situation lead up to an unsavory end, but I understand both sides and know where the fault lies, but that doesn’t mean I can’t understand why it happened, or doesn’t mean I can’t relate to Eridan. Everyone is flawed, some more than others, flawed characters are more relatable in a lot of cases. Upbringing has to do with a lot of faults, doesn’t excuse shit that rises from it, but it definitely explains why the outcome happened. Just because something is understandable doesn’t mean it’s excused, and even then, only really by human standards.
